Brighton Rockers The Rattlebacks have just unleased ferocious single 'Rattleback' from their upcoming EP 'Kink. The EP is released in November and is accompanied by a tour of the UK.
We spoke to Coxy from the band recently about what he likes to listen to and what a fun chat it was!
What was the last song you listened to?
Punk on the Rocks! HOW ARE YA? Love On The Rocks by The Darkness would be the obvious answer no? The truth is it would have been one of our album tracks that we aren’t supposed to be talking about yet…… As we should be focusing on the Rattleback single from our EP Kink *cough* the single is out now *cough* on all streaming platforms.
Do you listen to your own songs when you’re driving or working out?
I really wished that I had read the next question before answering the last one! Yes…. But only the tunes that are in production, once they are out I have no interest in them as we are onto the next thing. When I am driving, I will be picking at things listening to different mixes, always trying to look for that 1% that makes a song slightly better. The gym side of things, when I go, is a lot of fun with the tunes. I try to manifest that I am on a massive stage running around and that gives me the motivation to push through.
You’re in a club or venue and one of your tracks comes on what do you do?
It happens to us more than you’d think, people just want to put a smile on your face, which it of course does. That said, it does make me sink in my seat slightly.
What were you listening to when you were 13?
Loving these questions! For me personally it was Guns N’ Roses, the best band to have ever existed. Now the other band members might not agree with that, but that wasn’t the question! For me GNR had it all, the riffs, the swagger, the attitude, the danger, the solos and god damn those vocals. GNR had such a depth to them specifically in the rock niche that I just found inspiring. Axl’s lyrics got me through a lot of my teenage angst and his performance abilities continue to inspire me to this date.
What are you listening to at the moment that we should check out?
Anything by a band called Bloodhounds. They just played their last show last weekend and I was heartbroken to miss it. They were a band that we became brothers with after we played a show together and it has been a lovefest ever since. We learnt a lot from them and they directly influenced our writing for a period of time as we had to compete (in the friendliest context possible) with them. I just wanted to take this moment to raise a glass to them and thank them for the memories and the tunes.
What one song instantly makes you smile when you hear it?
Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith. I had a lady in the car and I was driving my old school MR2 with that song blaring out the speakers. We pulled up to a set of traffic lights and I did what was my most impressive burn out of my driving career, the smoke came through the windows and just as it cleared I had enough time to say “fuuuuuuuuuuccc” before the blue lights of the police car came on. Oops….
What is your guilty pleasure?
Am I really going to go on record and say this… Girls Aloud. They were absolute pop sensations man, I couldn’t of been more than 7 when they came out and I can safely say I became even more interested in them as a teenager hahahaha. They had great hooks, melodies, they could sing and of course they are beautiful women. I couldn’t name you any albums or anything, but no bullshit I think they were great.
What album do you always listen to all the way through?
Appetite for Destruction. Permission to Land. Facelift. Slave To The Grind. There are four to keep you busy 😉
What track would you like to cover?
We don’t really do covers as a band, which is strange really as we have talked about doing a covers EP at some point. We did jam a version of Black Leather by The Professionals with me on vocals which I was particularly fond of, maybe we can wheel that out one day. Simply too many good songs to choose from!
What track do you wish you had written?
(Everything I Do) I Do It For You - Bryan Adams. For the simple reason it was number one for 16 weeks. It came out a few years before I was born I might add…..
Thanks for chatting to us, it was an absolute pleasure!
