Australias Raising Ravens recently played at Rebellion Punk Festival and has just released their new single 'Unheard' which is taken from their recend debut album which reached Number 3 in the Australian Independant Chart.

We grabbed Jess for a quick chat!

Introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?

My name is Jess and i am the lead singer/guitarist.

.Tell us a little about your band, how you got together and the story behind the name if there is one.

Raising Ravens started as a solo project during the beginning phases of the covid pandemic and lock downs. I decided i wanted to create an album including some of my favourite musical friends and spent a large portion of lockdowns writing and recording with producer and friend Lachlan Mitchell. The name comesfrom a Spanish proverb, 'If you raise ravens they will peck your eyes out. It came from a film I loved by Carlso Saura called Cria Cuervos. I chose the name because i write a lot about humanity and the legacy of power dynamics and trauma passed down from generation to generation. I often write about topics that people prefer to keep buried.

Tell us a bit about your latest single, what’s the story behind the song?

The latest single in Unherd. I wrote this as an observation of the mob mentality and how easy it is to be turned against each other given the right circumstances.

What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?

I generally start with a guitar part and a vocal melody then go from there. My writing style is organic in that it has to come to me spontaneously. I never sit down and go 'today I'm writing a rock song'. It has to come from inspiration which i usually draw from long bouts of life activity and events then periods of quiet when the music comes to me from nowhere.

What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?

I have always had a very eclectic taste in music from folk to classical to metal to punk to rock to anything that draws me in.

What can you tell us about the release that the song has come from?

Unherd cane from the debut album Leaving With The Halflight. It is a full length album that came out in March 2023.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

Thats a hard one. They would probably be surprised that I like being alone and enjoy solitude. I guess that's odd for someone in a band surrounded by so many people.

Thanks for chatting with us Jess!
