Hailing from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, post-hardcore quartet headcage wowed us with their single 'Talk More' last month and delighted us with what was probably our favourite video of last year! What better way to kick off our interviews for 2023 than with Elliott from the band!
Hi, Elliott, thanks for chatting to us today. Can you introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?
My name's Elliot and I write songs and play bass in headcage.
Tell us a little about the history of the band and what the name means.
The band started after all of us had left our previous bands and the first lockdown was well under way. Feeling very despondent I decided to focus on writing the heavier rock music I've always wanted too. After awhile I put an ad out and all the guys responded and we began writing songs over Skype that day. And we were working solid for exactly 2 years until our first release. 'headcage' to us means being trapped inside your own head.
Tell us a bit about 'Talk More', what’s the story behind the song?
The track highlights the importance of communication, encouraging the listener the simple solution of talking it out with someone. There's also lots of room for interpretation and can be catered to each listener.
What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?
The full body of music is written first, then our vocalist Leyum will write to that. Often the music will tweak as we go along to help compliment the vocal lines.
What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?
In regards to bands it's very much a mix between the nostalgia of the bands we grew up with such as Fightstar, Breaking Benjamin, Story of the Year etc and the bands leading the rock circuit today such as Boston Manor, Static Dress Dream State etc.
You have a music video to go along with this single, what is the story behind that, was it fun to make?
The music video was extremely fun to make for us, if you've seen you'll understand that it's not the typical serious band performance video. We wanted to switch things up in regards to that format and make a pastiche to 90s boy band videos to contrast a very serious song. All of us, as people, love the silly side of life and we also wanted to embrace that and show it through our art.
What can you tell us about the album that the song has come from?
So currently this track hasn't come from a larger body of work, rather just included in our first set of singles. We do have plans to release a larger body of work towards the end of 2023 so stay tuned.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
Our versatile musical backgrounds I think, both our guitarist and drummer come from a metal/hardcore background, myself previously played in an indie band and our vocalist was in a rap duo. Quite the mixture of genres coming together into headcage.
Do you have any shows coming up that we should get ourselves along to?
Stay tuned for announcements coming in 2023, we plan to hit as many new areas as possible.
Thanks for chatting to us, we're looking forward to some shows and more awesome music videos from you this year!
'Talk More' is out now.
