Give Me a Remedy are based in Gießen, Germany and has just released their latest single, "Enemy" - an angry girl rock anthem reminiscent of the styles of Paramore, Bring Me The Horizon and Evanescence.
We're big fans of the track here and we recently caught up with Natalie for chat about the band and the new release.
Introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?
I’m Natalie and I sing in Give Me A Remedy, a melodic Rockband from Gießen, Germany.
Tell us a little about your band, how you got together and the story behind the name if there is one.
We formed the band in 2020, which is a rough time to start, because the first seven months we couldn’t even meet for practice due to Covid. Almost all of us (Lukas on guitar, Paul on keys, Johannes on bass) somehow knew each other through friends, but we didn’t have a drummer yet. We lucked out with our drummer Josh, who comes from another city and found us through an advert. When we were finally able to meet in person, we quickly realized that this is a great group of musicians and that really motivated us to start taking it seriously and get into songwriting and booking gigs… The name we kind of just came up with after thinking of about 100 other names that weren’t quite working (which included “Never Shout Wolf” and “Virgo Season”). We later realized that “give me a remedy” is a line from a Bring Me The Horizon song which is fun, because we love the band!
Tell us a bit about your latest single, what’s the story behind the song?
Our latest song “Enemy” tackles any feelings one has with dealing with a sort of person you really don’t want in your life anymore. That could be any version of yourself you don’t like or any other person that’s wronged you. People go on and on about having to make peace with situations and forgiving and forgetting, but sometimes all you want to do is be assertive in your feelings towards someone and just not be the bigger person for once. That alone can lead to more peace in its own way!
What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?
Most of the time it starts with a chord pattern or a keyboard phrase and then we start building around that. Most of us are multi instrumentalists, so anyone can come up with a cool idea on guitar or piano. For “Enemy” it started with the catchy hook-melody, which none of us had been able to get out of our heads since we wrote it.
What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?
We all listen to lots of different music, but our common denominator is Rock in all its genres. So we were listening to bands like Normandie, Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore. For lyricism and toplining I like to find inspiration outside of this genre and go towards more indie pop artists like Banks and Tove Lo.
If you have a music video to go along with this single, what is the story behind that, was it fun to make?
We knew from the start, we wanted to have a strong visual for this song, but since we’re working with a limited budget we had to get creative. We were able to get hold of a great space for filming, a TV studio that let us use their facilities for a weekend. We bought a pink photo background and a bunch of black confetti. A big part of the video was the homemade rotating platform, which really put our math skills and spatial thinking to the test and allowed us to shoot scenes while spinning. The platform was initially our bassist Johannes' and our guitarist Lukas' idea, which they then built out of a bed frame on wheels and wooden boards. I actually didn't believe it would ever work, but lo and behold - it worked out perfectly!
What can you tell us about the release that the song has come from?
The single is a stand-alone release for now - but we have more songs in the making. We found a great producer and studio in our area (Northroad Studio in Breidenbach), who mixed “Enemy” and is also producing our next upcoming single. We’ve done some great creative work together and are excited for what’s to come in the future. For those who want to hear more from us, we have a 5-song EP called “Full Circle” which we recorded and mixed ourselves, released last year - you can find some more gems on there :)
What would people be surprised to know about you?
Three out of five of us actually play in another band together, where we do Funk and Rock covers!
Do you have any shows coming up that we should get ourselves along to?
We have some local shows around our city, including city festivals, as well as some bigger shows in Eschwege and Kassel. One of the gigs we are most excited for is our slot at “Open Flair”, a big and beloved festival in Eschwege, where we’ll be playing alongside While She Sleeps, As Everything Unfolds and Wolfmother. So anyone in the area is welcome to come and rock with us!
Thanks for chatting with us today :)
